#36 How corporate media helped steer leftist revolutions right -Vincent Bevins

Egypt's 2011 uprising inspired people around the world to revolt. But whether in the case of Brazil or Turkey or Hong Kong, mass protests demanding more rights and fairer economies backfired -- they spawned coups, repressive governments, and a general shift to the right.
So what exactly happened? Did Western media misinterpret the nature of the uprisings? What can the decade teach us about modern imperialism?
Journalist Vincent Bevins spent four years doing 250 interviews across 12 countries to make sense of what happened. The result is his new book: If We Burn: The Mass Protest Decade and the Missing Revolution. The book is Bevins' second after The Jakarta Method, a history of US covert tactics and imperialism. We highly recommend both.
